These requirements apply to specific commercial equipment categories, including some classified as residential-duty commercial water heaters. However, a policy issued by the U.S. Department of Energy on May 5, 2026, delays certain enforcement activities and states that the department will not seek specified civil penalties for covered products manufactured between October 6, 2026, and October 5, 2027. The policy does not repeal the standards or change the obligations established by the regulations. For Charlotte homeowners, the key distinction is the scope of the requirements: the compliance date concerns the manufacture of covered equipment. It therefore does not represent a general requirement to replace water heaters already installed in homes, nor does it mean that every residential model falls under these commercial standards.
