ELECTRIC TANKS

Electric Water Heater Not Working

When an electric water heater stops heating, the usual causes are a tripped 240V breaker, a high-limit reset, a failed heating element, or a thermostat. If the breaker is hot, the wires are discolored, or it trips again, leave the circuit off. That is not a homeowner reset loop.

Breaker and disconnect

The water heater should have a dedicated double-pole breaker. A tripped breaker can be a one-time event or a shorted element. Repeated trips need a technician. Do not install a larger breaker to “make it stay on.”

Reset button, elements and thermostats

Many tanks have a red high-limit reset behind the upper access panel. Follow only the manufacturer’s homeowner instructions; live 240V is behind those covers. Failed upper elements often mean no hot water; failed lower elements mean you run out fast.

When replacement is smarter

A 12-year tank with two dead elements, a leaking jacket, or burned leads is usually replaced with the 40- or 50-gallon electric package instead of stacking parts.

Element, thermostat and “repair cost”

A heating element or thermostat on a sound, newer tank can be a repair. We do not publish a bait “element-only” URL because the real decision is whether the jacket, wiring and age still justify parts. If the repair quote nears $1,199 installed, replace. Do not keep resetting a tripping breaker to save a service fee.
