NOISE GUIDE

Water Heater Noises Explained

Popping and rumbling while the tank heats almost always mean sediment on the bottom—very common in the Charlotte metro. Ticking can be pipe expansion. Hammering may be a water-hammer or check-valve issue. A scream or whistle at the T&P valve is urgent.

Noise and what it usually means

Match the sound to when it happens: while heating, on start, or at the T&P pipe. Charlotte hard water makes popping the most common call.

  • Popping / rumbling: sediment and steam bubbles. Service or replace based on age and leaks.
  • Ticking in pipes: thermal expansion; sometimes needs an expansion tank.
  • Banging on start: water hammer or loose pipes—not always the tank.
  • Whistle or hiss at T&P: pressure/temperature—do not cap the pipe; call.
  • Crackling with a leak: assume tank failure until proven otherwise.

Should you flush it?

Flushing helps some healthy tanks. Flushing a 14-year rusty tank can open a leak. SAFE would rather see a video and the data plate than have you disturb a fragile drain valve.
